Does it ever happen to you, visiting a place you’ve seen many times before, to be hit by some detail that is now so dominant, that you just wonder if you really visited the same place, if this is something completely new, or if you were completely blind all during the previous visits?

So I went to Volterra, for the umpteenth time probably. I love the place, the landscape around, its position on top of the highest hill for many miles around, its monuments, its atmospheres. Its food, right, its food.

Now, here among the poplars, poppies are basically the only spontaneous red flowers you can come across. There are red roses, but of course they are not spontaneous. This time in Tuscany I met for the first time these wild flowers, more pink or fuchsia than red actually, that are so widely spread across the fields and along the roads that I couldn’t simply have missed them every single time I’ve gone there. Or could I?

I don’t even know what they are called in Italian. If anyone has any suggestion about their English name, it would be better than nothing at all.

 

Anyway, they look really pretty from afar, and, unlike geraniums (or pelargonia, yes, I know), they also do close up. So, it’s was a pleasant acquaintance, whatever the name may be.
