Taking pictures of the unexpected isn’t easy for me, as the unexpected has the inexplicable tendency to happen when I least expect it to happen and I am therefore not ready to catch it, be it because I don’t have a camera with me, or because it is off, or in the “taking a coffee” or “do not disturb” mode, or I’m simply too caught by the unexpected to use my camera to catch it myself.
Once it happened though that we were visiting Ravenna, the Classe basilica, and we found ourselves in an unexpected predicament. A herd of some kind of bovines was grazing the October grass right in front of the church.
They must have been oxen, seen how tame and peaceful they were. The fact that they were cast in bronze probably helped. And the children enjoyed this unexpected meeting.
