The last emperor of Rome, a boy, had been exiled over seventy years before.
The surviving power of Rome resided in Constantinople. Italy was governed by the Ostrogoth king, initially appointed by the Byzantine Emperor to rule as governor, and then later on openly at war with Byzantium. At this time the war was between king Totila and emperor Justinian the Great and his general Narses.
And with Rome periodically pillaged by armies sent from Constantinople or by the Goths-Germans, in Ravenna West and East crystallize in a series of art masterpieces which preserve Roman architecture and embellish it with Byzantine mosaics.
This is Classe, once home of Rome’s Adriatic fleet, now location of one of the most amazing basilicas.
